Our target is an annual saving of 7000 million kWh (7TWh) of energy & 800,000 tonnes of carbon. Every day we'll calculate the energy savings as the Standby Saturday message spreads, so tell your friends, family and colleagues so they can get involved, then check back here to watch the campaign grow!

Standby Saturday is just the beginning

Standby Saturday 20th October 2007, saw the first nationwide overnight switch-off of non-essential appliances, such as TV's, home computers and mobile phone chargers, with the aim of significantly reducing the UK's energy wastage caused by standby power.

Switch off overnight, every night!

The Standby Saturday campaign is not just about one night. We all need to get into the habit of switching off appliances properly every night, instead of leaving them on standby.

If you're already doing this, that's great - but please register anyway so you can see your contribution added to the UK running total.

On our website you can:

  • Find out why Standby Saturday is important and check on progress towards our waste-busting target.
  • See how easy it is to get involved: don't leave gadgets on standby - switch off the power!
  • Register to confirm that your home, school or workplace will be switching off overnight to help reduce the UK's carbon footprint, by Saturday 20th October.
  • Get details of solutions which make switching off simpler.
